The name “Chautauqua” is often mistaken for a Native American word. Instead, the word comes from a cultural and social movement that started in upstate New York in the 1870s and flourished until the mid-1920s. During this time, hundreds of touring chautauquas presented lectures, dance, music, drama, and other forms of “cultural enrichment.”

While we don’t offer these forms of enrichment at the property, it does abound on the Long Beach Peninsula in its own unique way. Beachcombing, kite-flying, ocean fishing, foraging for chanterelles, boletes and lobster mushrooms, shopping and much more are the way locals and visitors find their enjoyment and entertainment in this very special place.
